Art Sherman was a bombardier in the B-17’s flying out of Italy. He had many harrowing missions when the anti aircraft fire got very heavy. On one particular mission he decided to pt on his helmet for no particular reason but not even 10 minutes later a piece of flak came up and hit him in the head going through the helmet and striking his skull. He lost a lot of blood and was lucky to survive. After that incident, he went on to work counterintelligence at the base in Foggia, Italy.
Mr. Sherman was a very kind hearted man who was gracious with his time and he was truly a fascinating person to talk to.
